Common Questions About Oral Surgery

How can I prepare for oral surgery?

You’ll need to avoid smoking for at least 12 hours prior to oral surgery (and 24 hours after). We perform many oral surgeries using only local anesthesia. If that’s the case with your procedure, you’ll be able to enjoy a light meal several hours beforehand. We’ll give you more specific instructions. You may want to take off work or school for a day or two, depending on the kind of surgery you receive.

Some general dentists offer only the most basic oral surgery, while others don’t perform any surgical procedures. Thanks to the skills and advanced training of our team at A Downtown Dental Group, you’ll find a wide range of oral surgery including tooth removal, bone grafts, gum grafts, sinus lifts, and ridge augmentation.

After your oral surgery, you should not exercise at all for the first 24 hours. Doing too much too soon can increase your healing time. For example, strenuous exercise can loosen the blood clot on an extraction site and cause a painful condition known as dry socket. After the first day, limit your exercise to low-impact activities for several more days to prevent complications.
